The motel is cold. Once we warm up the car, we drive immediately down a long and snowy road to Mountain Air, where we see Clem "Pop" Schaffer's ornate Schaffer Hotel. The hotel looks well cared for but down on business; Brett and I look through the storefront windows at the big wooden rafters and leather couches of the lobby. No one is around.

Rancho Bonito is a brightly painted wooden cabin in the same architectural canon and state of maintenance as the hotel, and is similarly deserted. Our boots get wet.
